Message from Ms. Schaben

Hi! My name is Nicole Schaben and I am the new Language Arts teacher here at St. George. I’m looking forward to this new school year and meeting all the students, staff, and parents! Teaching at St. George not only means that I can continue nurturing confident readers and writers, but also the freedom to practice, share and rejoice my Catholic faith. I was born and raised on a small farm in Keoltztown, which is also in Osage County. In 2001, I graduated cum laude from Missouri State University with a degree in Early and Elementary Education. Soon after graduation, I was hired as a Title 1 Reading teacher. Teaching struggling students to read was so rewarding that I returned to graduate school to extend my knowledge of research based reading instruction. My new role as the 6th-8th grade language arts teacher will bring exciting changes for myself and St. George school. However, the same quality of Language Arts instruction will continue as I go the extra mile to ensure success for all my students. I will be implementing the new Houghton Mifflin Harcourt cutting edge English Language Arts curriculum, Collections. This program utilizes dynamic digital tools to provide students with a rigorous approach to reading, writing, and analysis. It is built to meet the expectations of the Common Core Standards in 6-8th grade writing, vocabulary, grammar, literature analysis, and comprehension. The anthology includes short stories, novels, informational text, and poetry that we will analyze for figurative language, literary elements, comprehension and its relation to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Reading skills and strategies will be taught in formats such as whole and small group instruction, read alouds, guided reading, shared reading, individualized reading, spelling, and word study. Currently, I live with my 11 year old son Max in downtown Westphalia. I enjoy camping, hiking, theatre, reading mystery novels, writing stories, jewelry making, bike riding, and taking long leisurely walks along my street at sundown. I like cucumbers, anything BBQ or peppermint flavored, and cats. I challenge myself and everyone else to see, think, and do differently. Life is fun-tastic! .
